The Sound of Change: Uncovering the Music That Defines Us

Learn how we produced The Sound of Change with Senses Fail's Buddy Nielsen, reaching the Apple Podcasts Top 10 through remote audio polish.

Behind every iconic artist or creative leader is a formative record that sparked their ambition. The Sound of Change was designed to step away from standard press junkets and dive straight into raw, unfiltered vulnerability. Partnering with Roc Nation, Cue Productions brought broadcast-grade remote engineering and story-first editing to bring this music-led interview series to life.

The Brief

During global tour cancellations, music fans and artists alike lost the physical connection of live gigs. Roc Nation wanted to give artists on their roster a way to stay deeply connected with their fans through a studio-quality podcast produced entirely remotely.

Hosted by Senses Fail frontman Buddy Nielsen, The Sound of Change aimed to move beyond standard album promotion. The goal was to ask guests, ranging from touring musicians and record producers to professional chefs and athletes, a single core question: Which album changed your life? The show required a complete production framework to handle remote recording, audio mastering, and launch promotion to ensure a chart-topping debut.

How We Made It Work: Capturing Intimate Conversations Remotely

To create an atmospheric, intimate listening experience across continents, Cue established an agile remote production pipeline.

We focused on:

  • Remote Studio Recording Kits: To guarantee pristine audio quality despite artists recording from home during lockdown, we dispatched pre-configured professional recording setups directly to hosts and guests across the globe.
  • Warm, Nostalgic Audio Engineering: Conversations centred around personal memories and music require subtle, high-grade audio treatment. Our engineers removed line noise and room reflections, balancing guest tracks to maintain an authentic, fireside chat feel.
  • Story-First Editing: Remote interviews can easily drift. Our post-production team carefully edited each conversation, weaving together personal anecdotes of growing up, overcoming anxiety, and creative burnout with the specific tracks that carried guests through those moments.
  • Strategic Launch Campaign: We coordinated launch assets with talent PR and management teams, delivering eye-catching social clips and audiograms designed to drive immediate engagement across Instagram, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts.

The Results

The Sound of Change launched to immediate critical and audience acclaim, becoming a standout title in Roc Nation’s original media portfolio.

  • Chart Success: Broke into the Top 10 on the Apple Podcasts charts during its debut week, driven by coordinated launch strategies and bingeable multi-episode drops.
  • High Social Engagement: Generated over 500,000 social media impressions and 250,000+ listens across platforms.
  • Unfiltered Fan Connection: Created a lasting, vulnerable archive of conversations that allowed fans to discover the personal stories behind their favourite artists and public figures.

What Listeners Love

Audiences respond to the unfiltered, nostalgic vulnerability. Because music acts as an emotional time machine, guests open up about real-life struggles, from early career failures and coping with anxiety to finding community in local music scenes, yielding stories far richer than typical press interviews.

Elevating Music Storytelling

For Cue, The Sound of Change demonstrates how expert remote production and thoughtful narrative direction can turn a simple conversational concept into a chart-topping original media property.
Music is tied to our deepest memories. By giving Buddy Nielsen and his guests the tools to speak openly about the records that shaped them, we helped build a series that resonates with anyone who has ever been saved by a song.
