How do you take the rich, complex world of Britain’s rail network and turn it into an engaging audio series for passengers, transport enthusiasts, and the public? In partnership with West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway, Cue Productions developed and produced On The Rails. By blending field recordings, expert interviews, and rich sound design, we crafted a podcast that takes listeners behind the scenes of the region's rail network.
West Midlands Railway wanted to connect with their passengers beyond the daily commute. The rail network plays a vital role in regional identity, local economies, and sustainability, but much of the hard work and history happens behind closed doors.
The goal was to build a warm, accessible audio series that explored the network from every angle: from the history of legendary routes and community rail projects to modern engineering feats and new fleet rollouts. The client needed a turnkey partner to manage the entire process, including episode planning, script consultation, field and studio recording, editing, and audio mastering.
To capture the true atmosphere of the railways, we stepped out of the traditional podcast booth to bring authentic, location-based soundscapes into the mix.
We focused on:
On The Rails successfully launched as a multi-layered brand asset, strengthening connections between the train operator, its staff, and the wider community.
Audiences enjoy the behind-the-scenes access and rich atmospheric soundscapes. By taking listeners onto train cabs and into historic stations, the show offers a fascinating peek into an everyday service that millions rely on, turning routine journeys into stories of human connection and engineering heritage.
For Cue, On The Rails demonstrates how corporate and public-sector storytelling can be elevated through immersive audio engineering and thoughtful field production.
The aim of On the Rails is to give a compelling insight into all things rail, and hopefully, episodes will deliver this by offering a valuable experience to listeners. With railway tips, insightful advice, and exclusive interviews, there’ll be many fascinating railway stories from colleagues within WMT, LNR, and others across the industry.

Audio is the ultimate medium for transport storytelling. By stepping out of the studio and capturing the real sounds of the network, we helped West Midlands Railway create a series that brings their history and modern innovations directly to their passengers.
